How to Make an RPG Verion 0.4 release.

Hello, as you probably know if you're visiting this site, I'm writing a book about how to make an RPG. But it's not just a book it's a full game engine, collection of art assets and samples that take you, step by step, from drawing a sprite to a fully featured game. I'm in early access mode at the moment. In early January, after getting some requests, I opened up the product to people interested in purchasing early. Early-access is only available to people on the mailing list at the moment. You can sign up for the mailing list here. There you'll find details about how to purchase.

That's the preamble out the way! In March, I've been grinding on with the editing and adding a few corrections to the earlier chapters.

Thanks to everyone who's purchased the early-access book and sent mail. All the feedback has been very useful.

Version 0.4 is available as of the 4th April 2016. (If you've already purchased you'll receive an update email shortly or just check the site :))

Where Are We?

The book is divided in to four major parts.

  1. Introduction / Front Matter
  2. Exploration
  3. Combat
  4. Questing

I'm currently editing the end parts of the quest section. After that there's some parts at the front of the book to finish:

  • Intro to Lua and some helper classes
  • How Games are Structured
  • Dinodeck, quick start

Then I need to clean up and release the C++ engine and deal with any issues there. I'm also planning on getting the full documentation out for the engine this month.

What's New in Version 0.4?

Here's what's changed since version 0.3:

  • Edited 4.3, 4.4 and 4.5 on the Quests section
  • Many new figures and screenshots.
  • Corrections
  • A new front section called "Development Philosophy"

What's Next

The next version will be out around the 1st of May. At this point the Quest sections and therefore the majority of the book is going to be fully edited. I'm also hoping to have a lot of the front matter done.

I've added a Frequently Asked Questions section to the Book page you can check it out here.
